My son was charged with possession and trafficking marijuana. How much time and what should we do
No one can predict how much time is involved, if any, without reviewing the case file. Hire a private attorney or if you can't afford one have your son demand a public defender at the first court hearing.
I agree with my colleague. You definitely need to consult an attorney so that your questions can be answered and your son will know all of his options and rights.
Contact a criminal defense attorney. If he does not have the financial resources, a public defender may be appointed. However, he needs a lawyer and needs one soon.
If he is in custody (if he is in a jail) and talks to anyone on a jail phone, TELL HIM TO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING. They record those phone conversations, and it can be used against him.
If he has not retained an attorney yet, and he has an arraignment, tell him to plead 'not guilty' and request time to get an attorney, if they do not appoint one for him.
