I have received a cancellation of debt for the year 2018. It lists only my husband's name and social security number. Do I have to claim it on my 2018 taxes?
You don't have to claim it. if his estate is still open it would need to claim it, possibly, if it is a valid 1099-C.
If the estate is closed, I doubt that the IRS would pursue it. You may get a notice that you can respond to with a copy of the death certificate.the
If your late husband got a 1099-C issued for 2018, then you need to be careful not to file a joint return for 2018, even though you would otherwise be eligible. Just file as a single taxpayer.
