MY former student is more than like a daughter to us. She is currently in the states as a tourist. She stays with us and her 6 year old son. Her American husband died but due to his sudden illness, he was not able to finish I-130 that he started. The little boy , who is an American citizen, needs to continue his schooling here in the States. However, the immigration granted her 6 mos extension only. She is told to go back in May. My fear is that she won't be allowed to come back for the next school year. So, I am thinking of making her as my legal daughter through adoption.
Adult adoption is legal but that typically does not effect immigration status. She will be treated the same by immigration. However, by adopting her you will give her inheritance rights as a possible unintended consequence. This isn't a good idea for your purposes.
