16 years ago my husband claimed he got divorce papers while visiting the Dominican Republic and that I needed to sign them at the Lowell MA court. I then thought I was divorced. But the divorce was dismissed according to the paper work I just obtained.
It happened that he came upon a large inheritance and took his girlfriend to the Dominican Republic, got married and apparently filed for divorce from me. I did hear about the inheritance and knew he remarried but I didn't find out that the divorce was not legal until the SSA asked me for my divorce papers because I hit 62 and became eligible for additional benefits based on his earnings.
He owns a home in Merrimack NH and I am close so do I need to go to MA or can I handle this in NH? I am on SSDI and do not have any other income so I stay with friends and can get short rides here and there.
I would immediately contact an experienced family law attorney in your area for guidance on how to proceed.
