My friend rented me his apartment while he was away. I paid the landlord some back rent that he owed. The next month I paid my friend some money but not all for the month. He didn't pay anything. The landlord bought my friend out of his lease. The very next day the landlord came with the cops and locked me out. No papers filed with the courts or served on me. Is that a wrongful eviction.
If the landlord accepted rent from you, that would normally make you a co-tenant, and the landlord would have to go through the legal eviction process (including serving a proper notice, and then going to court if you didn't comply), rather than basically locking you out.
You should consult a local landlord-tenant attorney to get a more complete idea of your legal rights and options.
