We are both 17. They took out IDs, we signed a paper, and they checked if our stolen goods were over $25. I was 99 cents over, and my friend was over by $37. They said they were going to arrest us, but decided not to. No fine was mentioned but I’ve been reading online out of anxiety. Definitely never stealing another item again, nothing is worth the way my stomach has felt since then. Will I receive a fine? They have our address.
Whether they will prosecute you is up to the police and Walmart. You stated that you "signed a paper" but you did not state what it was, so it makes it more difficult to advise you. If the "paper" was an admission of guilt, then yes, you will likely be prosecuted as they could simply provide a copy of that to the police and have a case filed. The "paper" may have also been notice of trespass - Walmart bars people who are caught in their stores from shopping at their stores. This means that if you go into Walmart again, you would be subject to arrest simply for entering the facility. More information is needed to know if you are going to be charged, but if so, you need to speak with a lawyer - convictions for stealing cannot be expunged from your record.
