I am developing a new sole proprietorship business. I will provide personal tours of the city and surrounding areas for an hourly fee for 1-3 people in a 5- person car. What would be the legal designation for a business like mine?
I am unsure if my vehicle would fall under "commercial" or "livery" designation, since my services are geared more toward entertainment than a ride to a specific destination. I perused the Illinois Vehicle Code, but I am still unsure if I need to get livery license plates for the car, or register under the existing chauffeur/limousine regulations at the city/state level, or how to classify my vehicle.
My research had led me to a grey area. I would really appreciate if someone could provide clarity about which laws and regulations would apply to my car and my business.
I'd ask the Secretary of State about license plates. You'll have to ask the City of Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection about a license as well.
