I see, if a student takes leave of absence while studying on F-1 visa, he/she should be outside the U.S. during the leave of absence. Is that rule applicable for people on OPT as well?
No, it is not, since work authorization while on F-1 status on "OPT" is a different animal altogether.. Talk to your school's DSO and/or international student adviser. He/she will explain to you the different rules which apply to each situation and their difference.

I agree with my colleagues ... you need to talk to the school's foreign student officer.
NOTE: the 90 days of unemployment rule will be the 'focus' of your conversation.
