My mom and I are the Visa applicants. My grandmother is the petitioner and she doesn't work anymore. Our joint-sponsor sent in his tax return and w2's form but the us embassy messaged us and said that we have to get a new joint sponsor because he does not meet poverty guidelines. Can some explain to me what does that mean? he has a wife and kids so is this why he can't be our joint sponsor or is his income too low? we don't have anyone else to be our joint sponsor and we were hoping to go to the states before the end of this year to take care of our grandma. She has money i the bank but maybe it's not enough. What does our new joint sponsor have to require to meet the poverty guidelines so we can get through with our visa? thank you.
A sponsor must prove that his income can support himself and his family in addition to you and your mother, all at 125% above the federal poverty guideline. You can find the figures for 2015 in the below link. You should also consult an immigration lawyer to determine whether your grandmother's assets can be included in evaluating her income.

A joint sponsor needs to have sufficient income to support the beneficiary, and the sponsors own family, at 125% of the federal poverty guidelines for a family of similar size.. If the joint sponsor does not meet that threshold, the only thing to do is get another joint sponsor who does. Otherwise, the beneficiary will not be able to get a green card. If your grandmother has sufficient assets, she may qualify as a joint sponsor or a co-sponsor. You need to consult an immigration attorney.

The poverty guidelines are posted on Uscis website. Form i864p. You should consider meeting with a lawyer.
