Is Social Security/Disability federal or state?
I ask because I'm currently located in Phoenix, AZ and moving back to Newport News VA in 1-2 months (hopefully 1).
Do I need to wait until I move to start the process of being put back on until I move back or can I start now?
I ask that latter question because I obviously want a Hampton Roads attorney to handle this as I'll be there at the end of the long process. (I've been through it before.)

Social Security is federal. However, length of time to process claims vary throughout the country. You can start your claim now and update SSA your change of address when you move. Your claim would then be transferred to an office near where you'll be moving to. You can also sign up with a Hampton Roads attorney before you move if you want an attorney to start the claim.

Social Security is a federal program so you can apply in Phoenix and then move your case. However, if you're only just applying now, it might be easier to apply in Hampton Roads because Social Security likes to send claimants to consultative exams and it might delay getting a decision if they have to transfer your case in the middle of the process. Practically speaking though, all you have to do is put in an address change. As long as you stay in the United States, your case is just fine.
Social Security is a federal program. While the process times vary nationwide, it is best to get your claim started as soon as possible. I would suggest contacting an attorney in Hampton Roads and get your claim started. Often the attorney will be able to handle the start of your claim through the mail and by phone so as to not delay.
