My guest ordered a package via Amazon to my apartment address with her name on it. I never received the package, and the apartment management told me that they sent the package back to sender (without informing me). My apartment has a package delivery room with shelves for all tenants, and as far as I know mail is to be delivered there with no "middle man" in between me and receiving my mail. The management of the apartment claims they have the right to look at my mail/delivered packages, and return them to sender if the name is not on the lease for my apartment. I went to the management to complain, and they said they have this policy to prevent subletting (which I'm not doing, my guest is staying temporarily which is allowed for in the lease). I asked them to point to the part of my lease containing this policy, and they admitted to me that this policy is not in my lease. As far as I know, interfering with mail is a federal offense, though I am not sure if Amazon is a gray area or not, but in any case it doesn't seem the management has the right to go through my mail and return it for whatever reason, particularly if it is not in the lease.
