I'm looking for an informed opinion on this. I'm the owner for a very small business and I really don't have the budget to pay for the services of several lawyers. It seems like business law/ corporate/ LLC is one specialty, and I.P. lawyers don't overlap and do that too at all, from the credentials of many lawyers that I've been looking at. I need to know: if someone is an I.P. lawyer, do they deal with and are as knowledgeable about LLC formation and small business/ web business needs ? Or I still need to see a separate lawyer for that ?
In a nutshell, there are attorneys who do both. Intellectual property, however is a specialty practice of law.
Many businesses attorneys who deal with formation, start-ups, etc., such as myself, have affiliations with intellectual property attorneys and are therefore able to handle everything in-house.
I hope this was helpful.
Best of luck.
The foregoing discussion does not establish an attorney-client relationship, is qualified by the limited facts presented above, and should not be relied upon as legal advice. Avvo doesn't pay us for these responses, and I'm not your lawyer just because I answer this question or respond to any follow-up comments. If you want to hire me, please contact me. Otherwise, please don't expect a further response. We need an actual written agreement to form an attorney-client relationship. You shouldn't rely on this answer, since different state laws may apply, each situation is fact specific, and it's impossible to evaluate a legal problem without a comprehensive consultation and review of all the facts and documents at issue. To obtain definitive legal advice upon which one can rely necessitates retaining an attorney who is qualified in this particular area of the law. Any comments are merely suggestions for you to think about in discussing your situation with your local attorney.
