Unintentionally passed counterfeit money. 2 $100 bills. I now have a warrant for my arrest. It's a class 6 felony. What will I be charged with? Will it involve jail time? Can I hire a bail bondsman before I turn myself in so I dont have to sit in jail?
"What will I be charged with?"
It sounds like you have already been charged with a level six (6) felony. It is probably the crime of Forgery or Counterfeiting.
"Will it involve jail time?"
A level six (6) felony can include jail time; six (6) months to two and a half (2.5) years.
"Can I hire a bail bondsman before I turn myself in?"
It would be a good idea to talk to a bail bondsman so that you know what you need to do to hire them and what phone number to call before you go in. However, if you don't know what your bond will be, you might not want to hire them just yet. It is possible you will get an O.R. bond, in which case you won't need to hire them. If, for some reason, you have a hold from some other case, or you failed to appear previously, you might have a higher bond (or even no bond). In that scenario, you will not need them.
Hire an attorney.
To be found guilty of this offense, the State needs to prove you did what you did "knowingly or intentionally", It is not enough that someone passes a counterfeit bill without realizing what it was.
I know from years of prosecuting financial crimes that cases like this get complicated quickly. The earlier you get an attorney into the case, the better for you.
