One month ago the mall where I work enforced employee parking. Mall security is patrolling every day, taking license plates. we are given a warning, then a fine and third, a boot on our car if we are not in our designated area. There is nothing stopping or stating that non-employees of the mall cannot park in employee parking, therefore we are scrambling to find parking in our designated area because regular guests are parking there. As a result some employees are late (even after leaving for work half an hour earlier than usual) We are feeling intimidated and scared. I just want to know if this is legal. You should not have to be afraid when you go to work that you might not be able to get home because of a threat of a boot.
An employer is able to control where you park your car and non-compliance can result in the booting of the vehicle. Options are either to make sure you are parking where you are supposed to be parking or finding a different, more reasonable, employer. Hope this helps.
