You start with your auto insurance company and make a damage claim, and your company will go after the repair shop to recover what they pay to repair your car plus your deductible; or you can sue the repair shop for the damages and their insurance company should pay. If there are personal injuries as a result of the accident caused by the repair shop's faulty work on your car, then hire a personal injury lawyer. If there are no physical injuries, you have no claim for money damages based solely on "what could have happened" with children in the car.
You did not say what the damages are. If they are to the car alone and the value is under $5,000, you can file yourself in small claims. You will need a mechanic to testify as to what the negligence was.
