my boyfriend was arrested for contempt of court and a bench warrent for not appearing in court he's now sitting in jail awaiting trial is this a serious charge where he will be sentenced to do manditory jail time
Contempt of court is not a new criminal charge and is civil in nature. Most of the time it is instituted by a judge for failing to complete part of the court's order. It sounds like in this case it is for not paying a fine. The contempt can be satisfied, or purged, by paying the outstanding fine. If you or your boyfriend don't have enough money to pay off the fine, then he may be able to get a new court date by paying off the bond that was instituted by the warrant. However, the situation may be more complicated than that if he is awaiting trial on a new or different charge separate from the one he is contempt of court on.
This can vary from state to state, so you may want to contact an attorney or talk to the sheriff's office/jail where your boyfriend is being held, as they may be able to shed more light on the situation.

It sounds like he was arrested because a bench warrant was issued for failure to pay fines. Contempt is actually a quasi-criminal charge, in the sense that it can result in a period of incarceration, but does not allow, in Oregon, the right to a jury trial. Because you can recieve a jail sentence, you are entitled to a court appointed attorney if you are indigent.
There more than one way that contempt proceedings can be pled or even initiated, so that can also effect whether it rises to the level of "serious."
