Without knowing how much the contract is for or what services it represents it is impossible to give you a correct answer to this question. If the amount was 50K or higher, than a verbal contract is worthless in the face of the Statute of Frauds. If the contract is for home repairs or improvement, the agreement would be invalid due to provisions of the Home improvement Act. There are dozens of other factors that could affect the answer here. That being said, a properly written and properly executed contract is always better than a handshake agreement.
