You can try the office of the Taxpayer Advocate. The contact information is at http://www.irs.gov/advocate/article/0,,id=97402,00.html .
You can also contact the offices of your Congressional Senators ( www.senate.gov ) or Representative ( www.house.gov ).
Usually, if you provide a photocopy of both the front and the back of the cashed check, the IRS should be able to find out where the money was credited to. Did you write on the check your SSN and that the check was payment for 2006? If not, the money may have been credited to the wrong year.
