It would depend upon your retainer agreement with your attorney, but if the attorney was billing on an hourly basis, then it's likely he used up your initial retainer through his time, and other expenses incurred in represent you. Thereafter, he required an additional retainer to continue working on your case. Unless you worked out, for example, a flat fee agreement with your attorney, then it's not unusual for retainers to need to be renewed based upon the time and expenses incurred in representing you.
