Prior to today's recommendation the children were not allowed to go to the father and his girlfriend's house. The father is on 2 years probation. He drew a gun on the mother. The girlfriend has been in jail and in a mental institution for stealing from McDonald's. The mother is refusing to let them go, will she be in contempt of court. They live in Louisianian.
If there is a court order in effect on sharing custody both sides should continue to follow that order and should not deviate from it unless they get advice from an attorney. If there is an emergency change in circumstances then your attorney should file a motion to modify the custody arrangement. If you have reason to believe that any child is in danger you can always notify child protective services and they will investigate the living conditions and arrangements. Not all deviations from a custody schedule result in contempt citations but there is real risk in not following a court's order.
