He used a line a shopping carts and a cart tractor. The hard impact stunned me but was intended to do more harm. Then the fellow uttered obscenities and repeatedly hit my forearm. I broke away from the attack and contacted the front store supervisor. I filled out a complaint within the store of what would be a Class One or Two Misdemeanor assault and battery. The store did not call police. Nobody of store personnel helped. Later, I was told by the store manager to 'keep it quiet'. Question: Do business franchises, including discount stores, have legal responsibility to contact police about violent crime on their property? Also, can this store manager fire me, or use schemes to get me fired, if I report this crime to police?
Though you can't be fired for 'whistleblowing' you can be fired for just about any other (nondiscriminatory) reason, including no reason at all. So, if you're terminated, it may be exceedingly difficult to prove it was retaliatory.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that in labor and employment issues, Arizona laws favor management. Any action your employers take against you as a result of you exercising your rights as a citizen would be illegal. That doesn't mean they won't do it. If the shopping cart wacko is still employed there, talk to a labor law attorney.
