Make sure that your criminal attorney and the immigration attorney work closely to ensure that you do not have immigration consequences to this act. Consequences are quite serious if you are convicted, since shoplifting is generally viewed as a crime involving moral turpitude.
Avvo doesn't remunerate me for this response, and I'm only offering limited advice based on the few facts given me in your question. I am not your lawyer solely because I answer this question or respond to any follow-up comments. If you want to hire me or are interested in a low cost or free consultation, please contact me. Otherwise, please don't expect a further response. We need an actual written agreement to form an attorney-client relationship. It's impossible to fully evaluate a legal problem without a comprehensive consultation and review of all the facts and documents at issue.
As others said, hire immigration/criminal counsel immediately. If you have a public defender, insist that they consult with an immigration attorney. You do not mention what county/city you were charged in, nor what the number of the statute is, but as others indicated, a shoplifting conviction could have serious consequences.
This general information does not establish any attorney-client relationship. There may well be factors not mentioned in the question which could and should be addressed in an attorney consultation.
