Contact an experienced attorney up in the Miami area. From what I have seen, the cops on that stretch of I-44 love to take currency from people. You will have to fight tooth and nail to even hope to get your money back. Good luck!
Were you stopped in OK? If not, you should re-post this and for the location use the community & state closest to where you were actually stopped. Attorneys in that area are who you need to be reaching.
The good news is you can fight the matter. The bad news is, win or lose, you'll burn through a fair sized pile of funds in the process.
I currently have a case almost exactly like this. You need to consult with a criminal defense attorney that is also familiar with civil forfeitures as soon as possible. Law enforcement is trying to take your money under the pretense that it is derived from a violation of the Uniform Controlled Dangerous Substances Act (AKA the sale of illegal narcotics). You will receive a notice of intended forfeiture in the mail sometime soon, to which you must respond. If you do not, your money will be automatically forfeited.
As I stated in the beginning of my answer, consult with a criminal defense attorney that is knowledgeable regarding civil forfeitures as soon as possible.
