I provided 1.5 months' rent and heard I can get that extra security amount back at the renewal due to the new Tenant Protection Act of 2019 law. Is that true? I also provided last months' rent at the signing of the lease. At renewal, can I also get that back as well? If not, is it applied to this leases' end to be compliant with thew new law?
It is my understanding that the provisions of the new law allowing landlord to only request one months' rent only went into effect in August 2019, and does not affect earlier rental agreements where your landlord may have requested extra security.
