Nearly all bankruptcy attorneys offer free consultations for prospective clients. During a consultation, the attorney would find out about your income, assets and debts to see if your are a good candidate for bankruptcy, and if so, what kind of bankruptcy case would be best. The attorney can also discuss the pros and cons of filing a bankruptcy case, and answer your questions about the process. Use the "Find A Lawyer" section in this website to find bankruptcy attorneys in your area.

Very generally, a big benefit to filing bankruptcy is that you can wipe out your unsecured debt (i.e. credit cards, medical bills, etc..). Collection calls and lawsuits against you are stopped in their tracks (usually). However, without going into detail further, there are many other advantages. A drawback to filing bankruptcy is that a bankruptcy may remain on your credit report for up to 10 years and it is a public record. You may have to wait a couple years to get a favorable interest rate on a credit card post-bankruptcy. With that said, it is important you weigh the pros against the cons. Really, a good way to do this thoroughly is to speak with a bankruptcy attorney. He or she will provide you with options you may not be aware of.
