I need to retrieve my alien number to get a new naturalization certificate because I lost it
You can order your file from the USCIS using the Freedom of Information Act. Your file will have your alien number.
Mr. Shusterman's (former INS Trial Attorney, 1976-82) response to your question is general in nature, as not all the facts are known to him. You should retain an attorney experienced in immigration law to review all the facts in your case in order to receive advice specific to your case. Mr. Shusterman's statement above does not create an attorney/client relationship.
You may have other documents that list your A number. It's on a green card, it's on a work authorization, it may be on other notices you have received. It also may be on cancelled checks you have submitted to USCIS for payment. If all you need is the A number, see if other past documents from USCIS have that. Wishing you good luck.
