Sounds like it’s a first appearance/arraignment for you and I’m assuming this is a misdemeanor not a felony. If you don’t treat this extremely seriously you could end up with a conviction on your record pertaining to a crime of moral turpitude which is what theft is, being a crime which reflects on your lack of trustworthiness as a person.
So do yourself a huge favor and hire a lawyer as you may qualify for a deferred prosecution to avoid a conviction.
