I have been a few days late with the rent. Is this proper cause for eviction?

Being late isn't a distinct ground for an eviction proceeding. Not paying after a properly served written Rent Demand and certified mail letter informing the tenant the rent is late when five days after the rent due date, is a ground known as Nonpayment. Even then the landlord must go to Court. Even then the tenant may pay what is owed and save the tenancy.

PROBABLY, but without seeing your lease and not knowing what you mean by a "few days" late, it's impossible to say for sure.
