i can take my pension early at age 55 which is 4 months from now 4/18/15 and because I was there more than 15 yrs I was told in a lump sum. However after repeated contact to the hospitals benefits administrator they do not return my messages-how does the process work-dont I need to inform them of my intention-do I need a lawyer
Have you put in a formal, written request to the Plan Administrator? Do you have documentation of such a request? A request for "early retirement" often requires that said request be made in a timely fashion. If you find that you are having difficulty obtaining answers from your Plan Administrator, it may be prudent to contact an attorney specializing in Employee Benefits. Avvo is an excellent resource for finding such an attorney.
You have received very good advice from the attorney above. Also collect all of your statements and identify the both the plan administrator and the Brokerage firm handling the plan. (eg Schwab, Wells, Fidelity etc) Call them and ask if they have any information on the plan and or forms for what you are trying to do. You will need paperwork executed by the administrator (most likely your employer) any but this will give you a head start.
