I was caught shoplifting in october . LP officer took me to a room. No police involved & no charges filed. LP took the merchandise & it was under $20. He had me sign a paper. I was terrified & cooperated with him. I received a civil demand from LP office dated 11/13 asking for $500. I only had 7 days FROM THE DATE OF THE LETTER to pay(until 11/20). However,I didnt receive the letter until 11/15. I didn't pay it because Ive done research and many lawyers advise people to just ignore it. I recieved the 2nd letter this month demanding $500 again. but they lied on the 2nd letter saying that the expiration date for the first payment was 11/28 which it wasnt. The actual expiration date was 11/20. Why would they lie? They said if I dont pay the $500 they will immediately take me to court.
Given that they have threatened legal action you may want to contact an Attorney in Massachusetts. I am attaching a link to the Plymouth Bar Association which has a lawyer referral service.
