I am asking for my dad but my grandma just recently passed away and we live in a house on her property she has two houses there, due to some money issues he wasn't able to put the house in his name because of the inheritance tax. The township decided to condemn the property and the two houses on it and blocked postal mail. How are we supposed to get our belongings out of there, are we allowed inside or will we get in trouble if we go inside? And how would we go about getting the property back or fixing it to make it able to live in? One house has not been used for a little over 2 years inside due to us just staying at the other house taking care of the sick grandma.
The safest way to address this is to take proof of ownership, with you, and your dad to the Building Dept of the municipality where the house is. Have a frank discussion with that personnel, who will be happy that you stepped up to address the condemnation issues. You will likely need a permit and inspections for all the work you do. But you will know that you are doing it right. The one caution I give you is that the cost required to put the property back into residential use might be staggering and may not factor well with the ultimate value of the structures right now. Therefore, I would plan a budget now, before going in to talk with the township.

Your remedy will depend on the reason for the "condemnation." I agree with Mr. Powe if the reason is due to the condition of the property, for instance building code violations. If, on the other hand, the condemnation is part of an eminent domain process, many more facts are required to determine what rights your father has as far as access and use of the property.
Start with Mr. Powe's suggestion and meet with the local authorities. Unless there is a very real danger to anyone going into the buildings, I don't believe the municipality can prevent you from retrieving the furniture, furnishings and other personal property. If in doubt after you meet with the officials schedule a meeting with a local real estate attorney to work through the issues.
