The first step is to separate. NC requires one year of physical separation in order to be eligible for divorce. So at least one of you needs to move to a new residence. The best way to deal with things is with a simple separation agreement (if one is needed). That does not have to be expensive. A fully comprehensive separation agreement can be done for most average couples for a flat rate fee of around $250. If you choose to fight things out in court, all you are really doing is paying strangers to decide things for you that you and your spouse likely could have decided yourselves fairly and for free or at relatively low cost.
