Someone is attempting to collect an old debt from me. I had all but forgotten this debt, but as I now live in Illinois, and the SOL is 10 years, they are threatening to send police to my home since I cannot pay a settlement. I'm not sure exactly what they mean by sending the police, but they expressed this threat to my partner, who is a PTSD/bipolar patient, and she cannot handle this kind of phone call. I am unable to pay the settlement amount as suggested, but I did ask if I could make payments. He said that I could pay the debt, that I just didn't want to. I'm not sure how to proceed. It's true that I don't want to, but also that I cannot. I can't afford any extra stress or bills right now, with pending hospitalization bills from 2 recent suicide attempts by my partner. Any ideas?
