How much does a Bankruptcy Attorney normally charge for Chapter 7?
4 attorney answers
In Colorado, average attorney fee to file a Chapter 7 and appear with the debtor at the meeting of creditors is approximately $1250. Chapter 7 does have a filing fee payable to the court in the current amount of $335. So, all said and done, average cost is around $1500. Again, this is in Colorado and it is a ballpark estimation at best. As the attorneys before me have responded, if it involves tax complications, business matters or some other wildcard, you can expect to pay more. Hope this helps.
It all depends on the complexity of the issues. Call one or two of the lawyers in your area who are listed on AVVO, give them a brief description of your situation and ask for an approximate fee quote. Cases involving taxes and businesses always cost more.

This can vary by the extent of a case and the region. An attorney in LA may charge more because they have higher overhead, rent, utils, transport, advertising, etc. A case can be a simple unemployed debtor 40k in a few credit cards and maybe a car loan or could be six figures with cc's, taxes, child support, medical, crazy pay day loans, personal loans, student loans, biz debts, foreclosures, judgments, reposessions, pending lawsuits, wage grarnishments, multiple sources of inconsistent income, self employed, the list goes on. On average I would say, and I am guessing because I dont actually know what EVERONE charges, but on average the going rate in San Diego right now seems to be around $1400-1600. Shop around and you'll quickly learn what the average is on your area and dont go by strickly cheapest fees, look for someone who seems to you know give a damn, be approachable and give you the time of day, answer your questions.
You should not rely on answers to questions as legal advice. Answering general questions online does not create an attorney/client relationship. To obtain legal advice call to schedule a consultation. Tokarska Law Center is a Federal Debt Relief Agency representing individuals and businesses in filing for bankrutpcy protection under the U.S. Bankrutpcy Code.
PS: Personally I would not pay good money and not have that attorney in court or at the hearing with me. Some attorneys like to delegate that aspect of the case to others. Ask the prospective hire if they personally will attend hearing with you.
Attorney fees vary by attorney. I would be careful of someone charging a low price for everybody. That is usually an indicator of an attorney who spends little time with the client and relies nearly entirely on staff. That means more mistakes will be made, because only an attorney is trained to diligently fulfil the requirements of ethical responsibilities. Some of us charge fees based on what a client can afford to pay, giving discounts to those who have fewer resources. Not all do that, but some do. If someone can afford to pay a fair price, others cannot. It will depend on the practices of each particular office. Be sure to choose an attorney who meets with you from the outset, and meets with you again at least two more times...to ask the important questions and to be with you as you sign your documents.
Please understand that I am not your lawyer and you are not my client, and the words that I write are not "legal advice", as if given to a client. You should not rely on my comments as though they are legal advice! Also, it is very important that you understand that my answer necessarily assumes certain things that may not be true. You should seek competent, local counsel to tell your full story so that you may obtain accurate, expert legal advice. I cannot be certain that my answer is correct, and neither should you, based on the limited information you have provided. I ask many questions of my clients before I render a final legal opinion. You should seek competent counsel to help you right away!
I would add one more thought. Do not assume that your case is "typical" or "uncomplicated". Let an experienced attorney advise you regarding the issues present in your life that will dictate the direction and cost of your filing.
