I am looking at rental properties and I was just turned down on the phone, without even asking my situation when I said I have 5 children. The house is a 3 bedroom. Currently my oldest two children do not live with me the majority of the time, and my youngest 3 are all under 4 and share my bed with me every night (two of them are still nursing). So it is like me and my babies in one room, and the other two rooms are always empty except when my kids are visiting. I was pretty sure it was illegal to discriminate against people with children. Is there a law that says landlords can refuse you based on the number of kids you have? I thought it was the opposite as long as it was a certain number of occupants per room? Two per room who are adults and babies didn't count? Or do I have it all mixed up?
Unless the rental you were looking at is owner occupied, as in a small complex and the owner lives in one of the units, you should be protected. Some other circumstances could change this, but they are unusual, e.g., that the complex is designated as a senior residence, or belongs to members of a club.
