my son was 12 and is now 17 and wants to come back to live with me i am the mother. I did not continue with the case because my son really wanted to stay with his father but i believe it was only a temp order. we live in los angeles california.
As departed Judge Stewart used to say, a 17 year will vote with their feet. They will live where they want to live or with whatever parent they want to live, no matter what a court order says. While there may be a court order saying where he should live when he is twelve, he has more say where he wants to live when he is 17. I would think the other parent would respect that decision unless your 17 year old has not demonstrated the maturity to make that type of a decision. To answer your question though, technically a custody order stay valid until the child is 18.
