I’ve already vacated my previous apartment because my former roommate failed to pay his portion of the rent for the last year. I submitted in writing to the office my intention to vacate as outlined in my lease agreement and the Florida state statutes . The apartment company is still trying to hold me financially responsible because my former roommate is essentially a squatter, but I’ve vacated the complex, moved elsewhere, and last I knew he had other people already living there.
If you complied with the lease, then you have nothing to worry about. If you "think" you complied with something because you gave some notice without actually reviewing your lease or the requirements of Section 83, Florida Statutes, then you likely have some real problems at hand. Consult with an attorney on the specifics to find out what, if any, liability you face.
