Sadly I lost my job and unable to find another. I am a few months behind (I have lived here almost 2 years) but working on it, it is a verbal lease. I got a 5 day notice to pay or vacate.Plus the amount they say I owe is greatly incorrect. Also the landlord is my former employer. The deal is, there are bedbugs everywhere and the landlord has known for quite some time and done nothing! I can't afford to move and I can't risk contaminating any place I would move into. How do I go about resolving this issue?
Wisconsin law prohibits a landlord from retaliating against a tenant for complaining to a public official about the conditions of an apartment. So, if you complained before you got the 5 day notice or if you are not delinquent in your rent, you may have a chance to defend against the eviction, if you can prove that the 5 day notice was in retaliation for your complaint to the Health Department or other public official about the bed bug situation.
