I purchased cigarettes on the internet in 2005 thru 2009 and was unaware that I was responsible for tobacco and sales taxes until after receiving a substantial bill from the RI Dept of Revenue. I cannot pay this bill which has doubled due to interest and fees.
What is my recourse? I assumed the retailer was legitimate and that all taxes and fees were the dealers responsibility as in any other retail sale..
Well, you got scammed. But only a greedy person can be taken in by fraud. Didn't it occur to you that there must be a really good reason why they were so cheap? This issue has been on the news from time to time over the past decade. I suggest contacting a tax lawyer in Providence to see what kind of deal can be worked out.
