Liens protect existing debts, they do not, by themselves, provide the right to recover the liened "thing." You can put a mechanic's lien on a vehicle if the owner does not make payment, but would then need to follow the rules of your jurisdiction to enforce the lien to protect your financial rights.
Alabama Code 35-11-110 et seq governs mechanic's liens and it's statutory requirements. The mechanic's lien is possessory lien, however, and is lost once you deliver possession of the vehicle back to its owner. At that point, you must file a civil suit to collect your damages.
