My son passed and at time was living with his grandmother, she allowed his girlfriend to go through his things without my permission and take what she wanted. Before that I let her use my sons class ring and her and her mother agreed to return it when she moved on. It will be 6 years in January and I've messaged her mother on many occasions and get no response.
First try to convince them to voluntarily return the property. If that fails, contact law enforcement and report the items as stolen. If that doesn't work, your only remaining option is court action seeking a court order for return of the property and/or money damages. Ownership rights in these situations become extremely complicated.
