I requested a 60 day extension on a car loan over the phone. I was told I would be getting a letter in the mail and when I got the letter I would need to call back and make a partial payment so the account would not be reported late. The next letter I got from Ally was a letter saying that my account was over 30 day past due and in danger of default. I immediately called and they said because I never made the partial payment, the extension was never granted. This has destroyed my excellent credit rating. They are not willing to reverse the 30 day.

Send credit dispute letters to the three major credit reporting agencies, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. In the letters explain exactly what happened and dispute the late payment. The credit reporting agencies may remove the late payment.
Your best bet is to request a simple one-time forgiveness. You'd be surprised what you can obtain by asking. If they say no, request a copy of the detailed billing history (which you will then peruse to figure out if you were fully 30 days late). If you were really late and they won't take it off on their own, go with the credit bureau strategy. Be sure to audit the original creditor as well (for emphasis and so that they will respond to you directly in writing). The FCRA has a a list of items required for proper validation of a debt and, without it, the item/late pay must be removed from the report.
