My mother died without will, in Washington State, leaving my brother and I as sole successors. He lives nearby and has taken possession of all her belongings, bank passbooks, papers, etc. Assuming the estate will not go to probate, how can I discover what money, insurances, etc, I am entitled to half of, when the brother will provide no information? I anticipate having to file a Affidavit for Distribution of Decedents Property with the relevant Washington State authority. (I am living outside of the US, making queries and phone calls difficult and expensive).
