I have worked for two years as a franchise assistant for a major mobile tool company. I had a time to be at work, was given instructions on what route to run and customers to see and specific actions to complete. Eventually, I was even provided uniforms. Yet, I have been tagged as an independent contractor by my employer. He doesn't pay any workers' comp, social security, unemployment or taxes. A few months ago, I was involved in an accident that easily could have been fatal. Come to find out, there is only a $5000 policy covering me and all my medical bills are under a med pay stipulation which requires me to pay the bills first before they consider reimbursmen. He does not abide by DOT regulations on driving hours and wreck could have been contribute d by questionable truck conditions. I just resigned, but have bitter feelings about the apparant disregard for anyone other than his bottom line. A recent corporate meeting exposed how other dealers were paying more with benefits. Evidence of how badly I was getting screwed.
