I'm a college senior considering attending California Western School of Law in the fall of 2011. I'm really interested in pursuing a job as a public defender and am curious as to how hard such a job would be to get with a law degree from a school like Cal Western.
There are many public defenders that have attended Cal Western. Assuming your grades are good and you pass the bar, you should have a fair shot along with any other candidate. If you have a particular county in mind where you want to work, it never hurts to stop by and/or call to discuss this with a senior level public defender.
With the right grades and experience it can certainly be done. Try to get involved in whatever criminal defense internships and groups that you can while you're still in school. Public defender jobs tend to go to people that are really passionate about the work.
Good luck and best wishes,
Here is a link to a video that a colleague of mine who is a public defender sent me recently. I think you'll get a kick of out of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6k1gGwFwXKA&feature=player_embedded#!
Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.
