I understand that the characters--and of course the specific language--in a novel are projected by copyright laws. But I heard that the plot is *not* protected.
Is that true?
Could I write a novel that mimicked the plot points of Harry Potter, say? Our orphaned heroine attends space-based boarding school to learn how to be a Solar Knight. She discovers her parents were killed by the Evil Galactina, who was banished when she tried to kill our heroine and failed (leaving her with the mark of the starry eyes). She joins one of three groups of students, and plays space-hockey, and one teacher is threatening while another is nice, but in the end the nice one is Galactina's minion, etc.
That's a silly example, but I'm interested in the legal principle. Thanks!
