My mother was diagnosed schizophrenic last year and has not taken any mental help this far creating a living hell for not only for herself but for the rest of our family. If she continues to go untreated in afraid of what will happen next. She thinks she is the prescient of the USA and everything in life is a movie.
You can get help for your mother by filing a Petition for Guardianship and taking over her financial and personal care. You should consult with an attorney who handles That sort of probate matter as soon as possible. A physician's report will be necessary. Your lawyer will know how to handle this. Best wishes to you and your mother.
Although AVVO describes this site as providing free legal advice, it is really a simple Q&A forum. The volunteer attorneys provide general answers. No specific legal advice is given here and no attorney-client relationship is established. For precise direction and legal advice, please consult in person with an attorney in your area. Be sure to bring all relevant paperwork with you.
Hi, As you know, your Mom's disease is especially challenging as she may or may not be "disabled" as that term is defined under the law in Illinois. Regardless of her level of disability, guardianship will not allow you to legally compel your mother's mental health treatment. If your Mom presents a danger to herself or others then you should contact the police so they may assist her in protecting herself and/or others from harm. You should contact your Pastor and seek guidance and/or a referral to a family support/assistance provider who can offer you proper guidance. In the alternative, if you know the mental health provider who diagnosed your mom's condition, you should contact them and ask them to refer you to a family support/assistance provider who may be able to offer you counsel.
Of course, as always this answer is general in nature, applies only to Illinois law, assumes certain facts omitted from the question and does not take into account any facts specific to any person’s particular circumstances. No attorney/client relation is created hereunder and I highly recommend you seek first the counsel and advice of an experienced contested civil litigator prior to taking any actions relating to this matter, as seemingly insignificant actions may have unintended consequences.

That being said, I am sorry to hear you are dealing with this. This is a guardianship issue; I will change the practice area of your question to get the attention of the right Avvo attorneys. You will need to attempt to obtain legal guardianship of your mother to ensure that her medical needs are dealt with. Good luck.
