I am grandmother to 7 year old in dss custody. Even though we basically raised the child our visits were 1 hour weekly and supervised. The child mother's rights were taken due to drugs. Not ours. Another report contained inaccurate information given by caregiver for the child. This information was used in court. So our visitation had to be supervised. It's a nightmare we can't wake up from. I taught school...my husband was a safety director for large paint company. His health caused early retirement. Our daughters lifestyle hurt us financially...so right now she has court appointed attorney. Being grandparents we get no information except what daughter shares. This has gone on for almost a year. Guardian asked caregiver if she was actively seeking long term care within our family. I am scared we are losing our grandchild. Our daughter is not complying with court as she should. DSS was including us as much as allowed. Now that has changed. The guardian still asks how much we visit and doesn't seem satisfied with anything we do. Personally I think she is a prime worker for Burger King but she lives the role of profile for CSI. Sorry. I am scared and disgusted.
I'm sorry that you're in this situation. Unfortunately, it's a common story. I suggest that you hire an attorney to represent your interests in the proceeding, even though you aren't a party to the case. As you have learned, DSS has a ton of power and they get to call the shots in that courtroom. Continue doing everything they ask of you, attend every hearing, and make your wishes known to the social worker, GAL, and parents' attorneys.
