I was parked in walmart parking lot when someone side swiped the passenger side and left a pretty good amount of damage well i didnt find it until six days later i went to the police station to make a report and they said they cant because its been more than five days well now I cant even view the video because walmart wont relase it until i make a report is there anything i can do?
I'm not sure how you know that this happened at Walmart if you didn't discover the damage until six days later but, nonetheless, you should make a report to your auto insurer if you have comprehensive coverage.
I feel for you. That's a tough spot to be in. Have you tried explaining to the police that there may be video footage that can help you identify the guilty party and that it is only available if there is a police report? Have you asked for a self-report? There are some jurisdictions that will allow you to write out a statement and keep it on file at the station. In the absence of that, maybe your insurance company will pay for any repair and/or help you get the footage. In any event, good luck and I'm glad, at least, that you weren't injured.
If you had auto insurance at the time of the incident, you can make a collision claim subject to your deductible. Best of luck!
I think your best bet is to return to the police station and advise them that without the report you will not be able to retrieve the video footage. Obviously you should report this to your insurance company if you are covered. You may also try to contact Wal-Mart again using the same argument you make to the police in reverse. Good luck
