Four years for an original A felony charge may not be a bad offer (considering that the minimum after conviction could be eight years). A defendant will usually have to serve 6/7 of his/her time on a determinate sentence. You should be discussing this with your attorney.
On 4 years, you may be eligible for Shock incarceration within 6 months.
You face a lot more time than 4 years if convicted of the A-1 charge.

I am a criminal defense attorney practicing in Nassau, Suffolk and New York City. The above information is not a substitution for a meeting whereas all potential legal issues can be discussed.
This is rather harsh, but considering the amount of time your facing it is not an unreasonable initial offer. Also keep in mind that you may be eligible for other sentencing alternatives that could lesson your incarceration time.
